Dust is a problem we’ve all had to deal with at one point or another. Dust accumulates as a result of tiny particles in the air. These particles can originate from anything–cloth fibers, paper, hair, pet dander, skin cells, dirt, and more. If you let dust build up too much you risk allergies and other health issues, so it’s important to keep dust under control. While you won’t be able to eliminate dust from your life completely, there are a number of cleaning methods and remedies to drastically reduce how much dust you have to deal with.
Air Filters
A quality filter can make a big difference in the quality of your air. If you’re using a central heating/cooling system, changing the filters can do a lot to reduce the rate of dust accumulation in your building. Standard air filters only remove big particles, whereas a high-quality paper or pleated fabric filter can do a better job. You should replace them every 1 to 3 months. Another option is an air purifier, which is a machine that helps clean the air by trapping dust particles. They’re particularly useful for high-dust environments, but they only clean the air in the room they’re in.
Vacuum and Sweep Regularly
Vacuuming should be a part of your regular cleaning routine. Using a vacuum with a high efficiency particulate air filter will help ensure you’re picking up as much dust as possible. Try to focus on high-traffic areas when you vacuum, and don’t be afraid to vacuum non-carpeted areas. Also make sure you’re changing your vacuum filter frequently, and that your equipment is in good working order. For areas that you aren’t vacuuming, make sure you take a broom and dustpan to get rid of any dust.
Microfiber Cloths
Not all dusting cloths are made equally. A microfiber cloth is designed specifically to trap and hold dust. Anything else will simply move the dust around rather than actually getting rid of it. Even feather dusters won’t do the job of a microfiber cloth. Make sure to hit the less trafficked areas with a microfiber cloth–places like the top of your mantle, beneath your desk, side tables and so on. Wash them immediately after use.
