Hard water spots are an eyesore and nuisance, but they can be a little tricky to get off of your windows. Here are some quick tips to get rid of unattractive hard water spots forever (okay, maybe just until the next time!).
What is Hard Water?
We all know what hard water spots look like, but many of us don’t know exactly what hard water is! Hard water is packed with many different minerals that can include calcium, magnesium, metal cations, and compounds like sulfates and bicarbonates. Whenever hard water comes into contact with glass and dries, it leaves behind some of those minerals in an unattractive splotch. If you avoid cleaning off hard water for long periods of time, it can eventually negatively impact the glass itself, as glass is a porous surface.
Hard Water Spots on Windows
Your home undoubtedly has hard water spots on windows in a few areas of your home, and they don’t typically go away with simple water and a rag.
- Make a solution of 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar. Ideally, use soft water that isn’t also packed with minerals.
- Soak a rag in the mixture and wipe down the hard water spots. Make sure that the rag is still soaked in the mixture after this is done.
- Press the rag firmly onto the area for a few minutes, making sure that the solution is directly in contact with the hard water spots. The acid in the vinegar helps to soften the minerals left behind to ease removal.
- Keep wiping and pressing the rag on the surface of the window until the hard water spots go away.
- Repeat as needed. If you have particularly stubborn hard water spots, you might need to repeat this process many times before they go away, or call in the pros at A 360 Cleaning.
