A Quick Guide to Cleaning Doors

cleaning doors

Whether at home or at the office, cleaning doors is important.

Whether at home or at the office, cleaning doors is important. After all, doors are busy portals. Doors can also serve as breeding grounds for germs. Cleaning doors is simple and although often overlooked, as spring allergy season reaches full swing you will want to follow our helpful guide for cleaning up your nearest door, and every other door you can reach, to boot.

Start Cleaning Doors With These Easy Tips

Germs can spread extremely easily, and bacteria and viruses are nasty surprises no one wants. So, start cleaning up doors with these supremely easy tips.

  • Use disinfectant cleaners and microfiber cloths: Start by spraying the cloth with the disinfectant cleaner. You should spray the cloth instead of the door’s surface directly to avoid any potential damage. Use the cloth to wipe down the surface of the door. For particularly stubborn spots, switch to a soft pad or brush instead. Be sure to not scrub so hard you lift the paint off of the door, though.
  • Don’t miss the most missed spots: You should take care to get the entire door. Don’t miss the most-often missed spots, either. The topmost edge of the door frame is one of the most easily missed spots. If you need to, use the white-glove test. The white-glove test can identify dust from missed cleaning opportunities. Another frequently missed spot is the inside edge of the door, the one that connects with the door frame. If doors are closed this way, instead of with the doorknob, it can quickly get dirty as well.
  • Clean the doorknob: The doorknob is perhaps the most obvious part of a door to clean. And yet, you’d be surprised by how often it is neglected. The doorknob is, after all, the part of the door most often touched as it opens and closes. Germs can easily transfer from person to person through the door’s knob or handle. Use a disinfectant or antibacterial spray or wipe to clean the knob. During flu or cold season, this is especially critical. But spring allergy season can breed enough germs from the constant coughing and sneezing, too.
  • Tend the hinges as well: Don’t forget to clean and oil the door hinges. This will help the door operate more smoothly, and prevent extra dirt and debris from being trapped by the door. This will also make routine cleaning less intensive if the hinges are well-maintained.
