Everybody wants to have a tidy, neat, and clean home, but the reality is that it takes work. Most of us have to work hard to establish and stick to organization strategies to keep everything that clutters up our homes in its proper place. And once we’ve got all the “stuff” tucked away, we’ve still got to do the actual cleaning. If part of the problem of cleaning for you is that you don’t like harsh cleaners, you’re not alone. The good news is that you’re not required to use harsh chemicals to get and keep your home clean. Read on for some natural cleaning tips to help ensure a clean but also green home that you can feel good about.
Avoid The Fragrances
Generally speaking, if the ingredients on a product include “fragrances” you should avoid it. These artificial fragrances are often undisclosed chemicals that do more than just smell like something good (or in lots of cases, not good). They can be endocrine disruptors and they are often allergy triggers.
Make Homemade Cleaners As Needed
If you need to clean, you can actually make your own cleaners. Vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, essential oils, and simple liquid soaps are all you really need. By combining the juice of one lemon with 2 cups of water and 2 cups of vinegar, you can make a lovely all-purpose cleaner that easily refreshes and decontaminates your home. This cleaner can even work on your windows. If you’d like it to smell like something other than vinegar, essential oils can help you out.
Rely On Microfiber
Often, a good microfiber cloth is going to be all that you really need to clean your home. Microfiber is an amazing material that actually traps and locks in dirt and dust on its own. You can use it dry to dust surfaces, including deep scrubbing in grooves thanks to the microfiber construction. If you need to wet the dirt to remove it, water is often going to be all you need (unless you need to disinfect from contamination, in which case, use the natural, homemade cleaners above).
Look For Green Seal Or Ecologo
When you do need to buy products for some reason, make smart choices. Look for eco-friendly options that have a green Seal or Ecologo emblem on them. Avoid products that contain triclosan or quaternary ammonium compounds, and acids. These can trigger asthma and have other negative health effects as well.
