Fall is here, and that means flu and cold season are upon us, so it’s time to start thinking about ways to protect yourself and disinfect your home. Doing this regularly is always a good idea, but it’s even more critical if someone in your home gets sick. We do the best we can, but adults can contract illnesses from co-workers, and kids are well-known for being germs home from school. Disinfecting your home throughout flu and cold season can help to minimize the risk of infection and spreading if someone does end up becoming ill.
Bleach Cleaners
One of the most effective cleaners for disinfecting is bleach, so it’s a good idea to keep some bleach-based cleaners on hand during flu season. Use it to wipe down surfaces that are touched often, such as countertops, faucets, and doorknobs. When using these cleaners, let them sit for around 5 minutes before wiping them up with a paper towel—this gives the bleach some time to break down the virus, and paper towels don’t spread the germs around the way fabric cloths do. Don’t forget to wash your hands with soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer with a concentration of at least 60% alcohol after touching these surfaces. This will lower your risk of infection and hopefully keep you from also contracting a cold or the flu.
Disinfectant wipes are also an excellent option because you can simply wipe down the surface and leave it to air dry, which gives the chemicals more time to break down any viral organisms, but they’re best saved for smaller items such as keyboards and remotes that require a different cleaning method.
Scrub Down Susceptible Areas
If someone in your home is sick, they might be carrying the virus around to common areas of your home, such as the kitchen and bathroom, so give these areas extra attention. Clean off faucets, handles, countertops, and anywhere your sick family member touched previously to reduce the risk of the illness spreading to others.
Disinfect Touched Objects
One of the more overlooked objects are the ones everyone touches. Things like controllers, remotes, light switches, computer keyboards, and other high-touch objects that could be harboring germs. These items are cleaned the least often in most homes when they should be wiped down regularly with disinfectant wipes to keep them as germ-free as possible.
