Whether we’re discussing your home, your office, or your home-office, you probably have policies in place for dealing with everyday messes. Obviously, you want to get to the mess as quickly as possible before it can stain and clean it up as well as you can. But the unfortunate truth is that stains happen. So does dirt, for that matter. So if you’re currently moving offices or homes, or otherwise looking to replace your carpeting, you may be wondering which colors are the best for hiding stains and dirt. While there is no perfect solution for every situation, different colors do provide some different benefits (and some provide no benefits at all). Read on to learn more about your carpet color choices so that you can make an informed decision.
Dark Shades
Dark shades are the best at hiding stains and dirt. Dark brown will hide dirt the best, but dark greens and reds will camouflage dirt while also hiding most stains, including the major food stains like wine and tomato sauce (making them popular with restaurants). Black, while an unconventional choice, will also hide dirt and stains beautifully.
Bright Shades
Bright colors can be hit-or-miss when it comes to hiding dirt and stains. Most single-color carpets in bright shades will get dull and dingy as dirt builds up. They need regular cleaning, especially in high traffics areas, like lobbies. Many designers circumvent this by choosing a multi-colored, patterned carpet. The riot of colors works better to obscure stains and limit the dulling effects of dirt.
Light Shades
Some light shades of carpet work fine for hiding stains but not most. Light browns, for instance, can hide dirt buildup fairly well and light greens can fairly easily hide grass stains. Food stains, especially greasy stains, are going to stand out on any light colored carpet, however. If you must go with a light shade, try to make it in a low traffic area.
Hard No’s
While there is no panacea for all floors, there are some colors that will literally never hide stains. White is at the very top with light beige tones also making the list. White and light beige will require constant upkeep and maintenance and will never hide dirt or stains. So unless you don’t plan to ever walk on the carpet and you won’t let anyone play or eat near it, it’s not a good choice.
